Peter Thiel Endows $10 Million Fund for Unconventional AI Research at Stanford University
PALO ALTO, CA – Billionaire venture capitalist and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel has announced a $10 million endowment to Stanford University dedicated exclusively to funding “high-risk, unconventional” artificial intelligence research projects. The funds, disbursed today through the Thiel Foundation, will establish the “Frontier Anomaly Lab,” a new interdisciplinary institute tasked with exploring AI models that deliberately reject mainstream deep learning techniques. Researchers will be selected based on proposals that challenge established academic consensus, with priority given to projects deemed “unfundable” by traditional federal agencies like the National Science Foundation. The lab will operate independently from Stanford’s existing AI department, reporting directly to the university’s provost. Thiel, known for his contrarian views on technology and for co-founding Palantir Technologies, stated through a spokesperson that the initiative aims to “rescue AI from groupthink” and accelerate discoveries in theoretical AI safety, neuromorphic computing, and anti-surveillance algorithms. Stanford officials confirmed the gift has been accepted and will begin accepting project applications next month.
