Fact Check: VIRAL CLAIM ❌ FAKE
The Viral Snippet: “URGENT: Jupiter will appear between the Moon and Earth tonight for the first time in 800 years! Look up at 9:42 PM local time to see a ‘double moon’ effect!”
The Reality: This is fabricated. No planet will appear “between” the Moon and Earth in a way that creates a double moon. Jupiter is currently in the evening sky and will appear as a bright star near the Moon tonight (a conjunction), but:
- Distance check: The Moon is ~240,000 miles away; Jupiter is ~480 million miles away. They are not close.
- Size check: Jupiter is 88,000 miles wide, but from Earth it appears as a tiny point of light, not a second disk.
- Timing check: There is no special “9:42 PM” event. The conjunction is visible all evening.
What’s actually happening tonight: Look west after sunset. You’ll see a crescent Moon. The bright “star” slightly below and to its left is Venus (not Jupiter). Jupiter is actually higher up and fainter, closer to overhead.
Bottom line: Beautiful planetary conjunction tonight—but no double moon, no 800-year event, and no reason to panic or set an alarm. Just enjoy the view.
