HEADLINE: Sony Announces Historic Price Increase for PlayStation Plus Subscription Tiers; Effective Immediately for New Members

TOKYO — Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed an immediate and significant price increase across all tiers of its flagship PlayStation Plus subscription service, marking the most substantial adjustment to the platform’s pricing structure since the service’s major overhaul in 2022.

The decision, announced via the official PlayStation Blog, applies to all three membership levels: Essential, Extra, and Premium.

WHAT HAPPENED: Effective immediately for new subscribers, and from November 6, 2023, for existing members upon their next renewal, the cost of a 12-month subscription has risen by approximately 33% for the Essential tier and over 35% for the top-tier Premium plan. Specifically, the annual cost for PlayStation Plus Essential increases from $59.99 to $79.99 USD. The Extra tier rises from $99.99 to $134.99 USD, while the Premium tier jumps from $119.99 to $159.99 USD.

WHY THIS HAPPENED: In the official statement, Sony cited “prevailing global economic conditions, including inflation and currency fluctuations,” as the primary drivers for the price hike. The company stated the adjustment was necessary to ensure the continued viability of the service and the delivery of high-quality games and benefits to subscribers.

WHO IS AFFECTED: The price change impacts all active and future PlayStation Plus subscribers globally, with regional price adjustments mirroring the percentage increase. Sony has confirmed that current subscribers with an active monthly or quarterly plan will not see the price increase applied until their next billing cycle following the November 6 implementation date. However, any attempt to extend a current subscription before the price hike takes effect will only be honored at the previous rate for a maximum of 12
