Simi Valley Fire: Rapidly Spreading Blaze Prompts Mandatory Evacuations

Location: Simi Valley, Ventura County, California.

What: A fast-moving brush fire, designated the “Peak Fire,” has erupted in the Simi Valley area, fueled by dry vegetation and shifting Santa Ana winds. The blaze has prompted immediate mandatory evacuation orders for residents in the vicinity of Rocky Peak and the Santa Susana Mountains. The fire is reported to have consumed an estimated 200 acres within the first hour of ignition, with zero percent containment at this time.

Who: The Ventura County Fire Department, in coordination with the Simi Valley Police Department and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), is leading the response. Multiple air tankers and helicopter water drops are actively engaged, with over 150 fire personnel on the ground. Residents in the affected zones are being directed to an evacuation center established at the Simi Valley Senior Center.

When: The fire was first reported at approximately 2:17 PM Pacific Standard Time this afternoon. Authorities have issued a critical fire weather warning effective through this evening, indicating conditions will remain hazardous.

Why: Preliminary reports indicate the fire likely originated from a vehicle fire along the 118 Freeway, which rapidly spread to nearby chaparral and grassland due to low humidity and sustained winds of 20-30 miles per hour.

How: Emergency services are urging all residents in the Pathfinder Drive, Kuehner Drive, and Black Canyon Road areas to evacuate immediately. The 118 Freeway is currently closed between Rocky Peak and Yosemite Avenue to facilitate emergency operations. Residents are advised to prepare go-bags, secure their homes, and avoid the area. For real-time updates, the public is instructed to monitor the Ventura County Fire Department’s official social media channels and the VC Emergency app.
