HEADLINE: ONE KILLED, TWO INJURED IN MID-MORNING SHOOTING DOWNTOWN; SUSPECT AT LARGE

LOCATION: Gaslamp Quarter, 400 block of Fifth Avenue

TIMELINE: Officers responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls at approximately 9:37 AM Pacific Standard Time.

INCIDENT: San Diego Police Department (SDPD) officials are actively searching for a suspect following a shooting incident in the heart of the downtown Gaslamp Quarter that left one adult male deceased and two other individuals hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

CAUSE (Preliminary): Authorities have not yet established a definitive motive. However, preliminary investigation by SDPD Homicide Unit detectives suggests the incident stemmed from an argument that escalated rapidly on the sidewalk. Investigators are currently reviewing approximately two dozen surveillance camera feeds from adjacent businesses and public transit stops. A weapon has not been recovered at the scene.

PERSONS INVOLVED:

  • Deceased: Identity withheld pending notification of next of kin. Described as a 34-year-old male resident of City Heights.
  • Injured: Two adult females, ages 27 and 31, who sustained non-critical gunshot wounds to the lower extremities. Both are in stable condition at a local trauma center.
  • Suspect: Described as a male, 5'10" to 6'0", thin build, last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and jeans. Witnesses report the individual fled on foot eastbound toward the Convention Center.

CURRENT STATUS: The 400 block of Fifth Avenue remains closed between Island Avenue and J Street as the Crime Scene Investigation Unit continues evidence collection.
